Configuring Windows
Initially, the following system environmental variables are set up by install:

mcs=\mcs
anvil=\anvil5k
cfg=C:\mcs\anvil5k\config.a5k

The config.a5k file is searched differently than before in ANVIL-5000. Install sets up the system environment variable "cfg". If you wish to set up a different login and configuration file for each user, then move the cfg entry in the control panel from the system environment to the user environment. The only variable used to find where the config.a5k file is located is "cfg".

It may be necessary for users of previous ANVIL-5000 releases to edit the Control Panel/System Environment/User Variables to remove all ANVIL-related entries, as these will conflict with those specified in the System Variables.

Graphics Drivers (Windows NT 4.0)
Graphics cards using the S3 Verge chip are extremely slow with ANVIL-5000 and are not recommended.

With other types of graphics cards, when you install Windows NT 4.0, it often defaults to a generic graphics driver even when a more specific driver is included with the operating system. For example; when installing a Diamond Stealth 64 driver, NT 4.0 defaults to the generic S3 driver.

If you experience very slow display response in ANVIL-5000, this is usually the cause. If a driver for your specific graphics card is not included with Windows NT, you frequently can obtain one from the card's manufacturer.

To identify your driver and chipset, log in as Administrator, click the right mouse button on an open area of the desktop and choose Properties. (Alternatively, you can choose the Display applet in the Windows Control Panel.) Pick the Settings tab in the dialog box, which shows you the current resolution, color depth, and system font. (MCS recommends a minimum of 1024 x 768 resolution, at least 65,536 colors [aka 16-bit color], and the small system font.) Click the Display Type button to see what driver is currently installed and which chipset was detected by Windows NT. Click the Change button to see a list (arranged by manufacturer) of the video drivers supplied with Windows NT. To replace a generic driver with a chipset-specific driver supplied by Microsoft, you need the Windows NT 4.0 CD-ROM. To replace a Microsoft-supplied driver with one from the manufacturer, which is usually the preferable solution, you need a disk containing the manufacturer's driver file.

Network Printers/Plotters
If you need to access a networked printer or plotter that is not your default print device from a DOS Command window, the PRINT command (used in SCRDMP.BAT and most PLOT.BAT files) needs additional arguments. To determine if the networked printer/plotter is recognized at the DOS level, type NET USE at the DOS prompt. This command displays all your network mounts (disk drives, printers, etc.). You should see a local and remote reference to the printer/plotter, as shown in the following example:

Status Local Remote Network
I: \\SERVER\DISK1 NetWare or Compatible Network
J: \\SERVER\DISK2 NetWare or Compatible Network
K: \\SERVER\DISK3 NetWare or Compatible Network
L: \\SERVER\DISK4 NetWare or Compatible Network
LPT2 SERVER\HPLJ4

The command completed successfully.

In this case, the remote HP LaserJet printer (\\SERVER\HPLJ4) is referenced locally as LPT2. If the remote printer/plotter you need is not displayed on the list, use the NET USE command to add it. For additional help on the this command, type NET USE /? at the DOS prompt. (Although the NT help on the NET USE command does not indicate this, using LPT1 for the local reference to a remote printer/plotter will force that device to be the default for all printing from within Windows NT.)

Once the local reference to the printer/plotter is established, edit the appropriate .BAT files that use the "PRINT Filename" command to "PRINT /D:LPT2 Filename" instead. Where LPT2 is the local reference to the remote printer/plotter.

Accessing the Version 5.X Move/Copy/Scale
A new interaction for Move/Copy/Scale has been implemented in release 6.0/6.1. To access the older menus used in earlier versions, simply press Ctrl+W. The user icons for manipulation remain the same as before and are still functional with/without using the Ctrl+W option.

Accessing External Text Editors
ANVIL-5000 now provides a way to access an external text editor in Windows. To set up an external text editor, a batch (.BAT) file named A5KEDIT.BAT must be created and placed in the WINNT directory (or the comparable directory for NT 4.0/2000). If you want to use the NOTEPAD editor, for example, the contents of the A5KEDIT.BAT file should read

notepad.exe %1

Any text editor can be used as long as the path to the executable of that particular editor is in the batch file. For example:

c:\utils\editor\myeditor.exe %1

To activate the editor from within ANVIL-5000, use the menu sequence (F.5.1.0.6.6). For any text entry, ANVIL-5000 will now bring up the requested editor. When you are finished editing, save and close the editor. This will return you to ANVIL-5000.

File Manager in Windows NT 4.0
Although not readily apparent, the File Manager from NT 3.51 is still available in NT 4.0. One method to access it is to go to START/RUN and type in WINFILE.EXE and press enter. If you wish to make a shortcut to winfile, or add it to your startup menu, you can BROWSE and find it in the WINNT35/SYSTEM32 directory. Associating PRT or GEN files using the File Manager is described in detail in the NT System Support manual.

Associating PRT and GEN Files in Windows Explorer
After starting the Windows Explorer, proceed to a directory where some ANVIL part (PRT or GEN) files exist. Click on one of the files using the right mouse button and choose the Open With option. (If the first option is "Open" rather then "Open With" then it is already associated to an application. In this case, proceed to View/Options menu in the Explorer, and click on the File Types tab. From here the application can be edited to add/remove other file extensions.) After you choose Open With, type in a description of the file type into the top field, then choose the application you want to associate with this file extension.

Windows Plotting Simplified
An easy-to-use utility is available that allows Windows users to send a plot file to any plotter on the network from within ANVIL-5000. You can download this utility from the MCS FTP site. It is contained in the archive file ntplot.zip and it works with functions 6.7 Drawing Layout, 6.8.1 Graphics Output, and 6.8.2 B&W Hardcopy.

The standard plotting procedure in Windows is to create the plot file, exit or minimize ANVIL-5000, and then run a separate DOS-based batch file (after first changing to a different directory, if necessary) to actually send the plot file to the plotter. The NT plotting utility automates all these steps.

The utility also includes an icon panel you can use to access the program.

The plotting utility begins by reading an external ASCII data file, which you can customize using any text editor. This data file lists each available plotter and the name of the batch file used to send a plot file to that device. When you run the plotting utility, you see the plotter name and the program sees the batch file name. After you choose a plotter and enter name of the plot file, the program runs the plotting command in the background, allowing you to return immediately to your work.

Complete implementation instructions are included with the utility, which was written in Extended GRAPL-IV.

Note: You need to have a working set of DOS plotter batch files before you install the NT plotting utility; it does not write them for you.
